Four real disadvantages — no sugar-coating
Let us start with what genuinely can be a problem — with the real scale of the phenomenon, not a catastrophic headline.
- Vulnerability to sharp objects — a tensioned membrane is not concrete. A wardrobe being carried in, a curtain rod held upright or a popped champagne cork can leave a mark. This is the most common cause of service call-outs unrelated to plumbing.
- Higher initial cost — from 170 PLN/m² versus around 70–150 PLN/m² for a painted drywall build. The difference pays back over the following years, but it is visible on the renovation invoice.
- Minimum order — for a single bathroom or WC a minimum value of about 1,400–1,600 PLN net applies, because travel, membrane production and the crew cost the same at 4 m² as at 12 m².
- Made-to-measure production — the membrane is made for a specific room: PVC in about 5 working days in Poland, polyester in 5–15 days in Belgium plus transport. You cannot buy a stretch ceiling in a DIY store and install it the same day.
Disadvantages in scale — the table
We set each disadvantage against its real scale and the way we limit it. This is what the honest version of the portals' fear tables looks like.

Myth 1: a stretch ceiling has a 20 m² limit
This myth has been repeated in rankings for years and is simply untrue. We install open-plan offices of 100 m² — as in our price guide, where such an acoustic project costs around 32,000–38,000 PLN net. Large planes are divided into sections with intermediate profiles, or a membrane with parameters suited to the span is selected. Our PVC film is seamless up to 6.50 m in width — the widest on the market — and polyester up to 5.15 m; beyond those dimensions, joins and divisions are planned at the design stage.
Myth 2: installation always means heating the room
Only half true. PVC film is tensioned hot — a heat gun raises the temperature of the membrane, which tensions perfectly as it cools. But polyester is installed entirely cold: no heat gun, no raised temperature, which matters around antiques, instruments, artworks or server rooms. Anyone who says a stretch ceiling always needs heat is describing only half the technology.
Myth 3: damage means replacing the whole ceiling
The most costly myth, because it scares people away from a technology that is exceptionally rational precisely when it comes to repairs. First: some damage — small punctures, marks from point pressure — we repair on site, without replacing anything. Second: even when the membrane does need replacing, the profiles stay on the walls. We replace the film alone, in one day, without a renovation. For comparison: a damaged drywall build means cutting out, filling, sanding and painting — usually the whole plane, so the colour matches.
Myth 4: polyester fears moisture and cannot be cleaned
Here nuance is needed instead of a verdict. A polyester membrane is moisture-resistant under normal domestic conditions — it does not mould or deform from everyday steam. For wet zones (a bathroom with a shower, a laundry room) we nevertheless recommend PVC, because the fabric lets water through slowly, so in a flood from above it will not protect the room the way a sealed film does. Cleaning: polyester is vacuumed dry with a soft brush, PVC film is wiped with a damp cloth. The claim that fabric cannot be kept clean is an exaggeration — each material simply has its own method.
What a stretch ceiling will not do — the limits of the technology
For full honesty, let us add the limits the industry's marketing stays silent about. A stretch ceiling will not replace ventilation — it resists the effects of moisture but does not remove its cause. It will not insulate the slab — thermal insulation needs mineral wool, and its carrier is often a drywall build. Nor will it form multi-level niches and cascades — that is plasterboard's domain, which is why in decorative projects we often combine both technologies: drywall around the perimeter, membrane in the central plane.
