Stretch ceiling or drywall? A 2026 comparison from the manufacturer

The short answer, with numbers: a suspended plasterboard (drywall) ceiling costs around 70–150 PLN/m² at the outset with skim coat and painting, a stretch ceiling from 170 PLN/m² installed. Over 10 years the costs usually even out, because drywall needs refreshing every 5–7 years and the first cracks at the joints can appear after just 2–3 years. On top of that, a stretch ceiling goes in within 1 day, without dust, and takes as little as 15 mm of height (3–4 cm with lighting).

What each one costs — today and in 10 years

Drywall wins on the initial cost: a typical plasterboard build with skim coat and two coats of paint is around 70–150 PLN/m², depending on region and complexity. A stretch ceiling starts at 170 PLN/m² for PVC matte installed (gloss and satin 185–240 PLN/m², polyester from 220 PLN/m²).

The maths changes over time. Plasterboard moves at the joints — micro-cracks need filling and repainting, and a full refresh of the build falls due on average every 5–7 years. Each such renovation means cost, moving furniture out and dust. A stretch ceiling needs no painting or touch-ups for the whole warranty period — 15 years for PVC, 10 for polyester; maintenance is limited to a wipe with a cloth. After a decade the difference in the starting price usually disappears, while the difference in renovations endured remains.

When a drywall ceiling is the better choice

Honestly: there are scenarios where we will recommend plasterboard, or a combination of the two, even though we earn on stretch ceilings.

  • Multi-level decorative forms — niches, backlit shelves, cascading steps. Drywall can be shaped at will; a stretch ceiling excels on large, perfectly smooth planes.
  • Insulating the slab — if you plan mineral wool under the ceiling (top floor, slab above a passageway), a drywall build is the natural carrier for the insulation.
  • The lowest one-off budget — when only the price on the renovation invoice matters and refreshing in a few years is irrelevant, drywall remains the cheapest solution.
  • Doing it yourself — any local renovation crew can hang boards, and a skilled DIYer can do it alone. A stretch ceiling needs a made-to-measure membrane and a trained team.

When a stretch ceiling wins beyond dispute

On the other side are situations where the advantage of the stretch technology is objective and measurable.

  • Renovating an occupied flat — 1 day of installation, zero dust, furniture stays put. With drywall, sanding the skim coat means dust in every room and several days of unusable space.
  • Low rooms — 15 mm of drop at the profile alone is a figure no drywall grid can compete with. In a block with 2.50 m ceilings that is the decisive argument.
  • Bathroom and kitchen — PVC film absorbs no moisture, needs no painting and holds water in a flood from above. Plasterboard, even impregnated, does not like moisture in the long run.
  • Integrated lighting — LED lines in profiles, backlit planes and starry skies are part of the system, serviceable through the removable membrane.
  • Access to services — the membrane can be taken down and re-tensioned without destroying anything. Cutting inspection hatches into drywall belongs to another era.

The hybrid option: drywall build plus membrane

This option vanishes from most comparisons, yet more and more architects choose it: a perimeter drywall build forms the niches and steps, and the central plane is filled by a tensioned membrane — smooth, backlit or acoustic. We fix the stretch-ceiling profiles directly to the drywall structure, so the two technologies join without compromise. The result: the decorative freedom of a build where it is needed, and one large perfect plane where plasterboard would show every imperfection.

Start with three questions. Are you renovating an occupied flat? If so, dust and time weigh more. How much height do you have? Below 2.60 m every centimetre of drop hurts. What is the horizon?
